One Under Rated Artist

Ruben Studdard

I have to say, this artist has been one of the most under rated artists even though he won American Idol. The man can flat out sing, yet he's not as famous as his smaller male counterparts. He has a greater appreciation of the old school music; he did remakes of Donny Hathaway's For All We Know, Al Green's How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, and Luther Vandross's Version of Superstar. He's studied the classics, but for some reason people don't appreciate him the way they appreciate Trey Songz or Usher. One of the many things wrong with the industry is that it places sex appeal over talent, and that is not to say that Trey Songz or Usher isn't talented, because both the brothers can sang, but their sex appeal appeals to younger audiences a little more than their music does. *shrugs* All I know is one of my favorite songs from Studdard is After The Candles Burn, from his debut album Soulful, in which on the CD cover, he channels Donny Hathaway (yes, there is a resemblance especially with the kangol/beenie/or whatever you call it).

It's been a long time, I shouldn't have left you...Male Edition

Well life has certainly changed for me. I stopped traveling on the path to be come a medical doctor, and I am now in grad school for Ethnomusicology, or the anthropology of music. Well it has been a long time, and I think it is time to share some of the albums and artists that I love, learned of, and got reacquainted with.

First, the most forgotten soul legend of all:Mr. Donny Hathaway

This man here sang the most beautiful songs about love and relationships. My favorites are For All We Know and I'll Love You More Than You'll Ever Know. (Though I'm sure Nina Simone did For All We Know first) (Admittedly, I like the album version of I'll love you more than you'll ever know, but the live version is really, really good too).

Second, this person I have made it no secret of how much I love his voice:
Mr. Raheem DeVaughn

I love the tracks Garden of Love and B.O.B. Like seriously, I'm in love with them.


Thirdly, this gentleman is one of the sexist men in the industry, and has a beautiful voice, yet is still mostly non-mainstream (I just don't get it). I mean, he's no Maxwell, who somehow manages to cross and capture people of different races, genders, and backgrounds (though he does have his share of other fans),but he certainly, beyond doubt, holds his own, in his own way.Mr. Eric Benet
This gentleman, without a doubt, is vocally talented. However, we really didn't know just how much he was talented (and that is saying a lot because the man can flat out sing) until his release of Sometimes I Cry. What he was feeling, you felt in this song. The man actually transferred his emotions to his listeners, which is a superpower few crooners possess.

Hi, *sheepish look*

I know that I have been M.I.A., it's not like anyone really reads this except me. But just in case you do, let me remind you of my other blog with all the feelings in it, entitled Requiem for Bea.

But I do have some songs that I haven't heard in a while, that hopefully you will like.

But if not, well I can't please everybody, and this is what I want because this is my blog...

Well the first song comes from the original Bonnie from the Bonnie and Clyde musical Duo (Jay-Z being the Clyde, but Bonnie has changed to Beyonce'), none other than Foxy Brown.

Thoughts from Bumble (Redundant right?)

There are days like today when I question my moral fiber. My threads, at best, are frayed and discolored. Sometimes, they are transient and unconnected. Rarely, are those threads completely collective and definite. But how often is it that we examine ourselves? Is it only when the presence of alcohol is clouding our mind? Or is it when we are wounded by life? How often do we examine ourselves microscopically?

Fiber, more than the dietary supplement we need daily to survive—it is essentially, what makes us tick—who we are. Fiber is the difference between a thief and a judge—realistically, only one thread separates them.

One thread can make the difference between Jordan and unknown, MJJ and nobody. What separates us is how we bind our threads. So when the threads become frayed—cut them off. It sounds much easier than it is—cutting off damaged pieces of yourself is often painful; they are apart of you—but it is essential step in the process called growth.

So even on the internet, I am irrelevant

If I ever had a shot to the gut, it was the discovery that I am either an butt or weird. Seriously. No one checks on me on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, or on blogger. No one cares about what I type. Not even my friends. That's sad really. Oh well.

I am taking classes in Ethnobotany, Archaeology, Evolution, African Diaspora, Culture, and Spanish. Interesting semester so far. But we shall see.

I guess it's time to evaluate who I am and realize that Jesus is the only true friend anyone can have.

FIRST DAY OF CLASSES

This day officially begins my day as a super senior. *Sigh* Seriously, I am getting two degrees, and it's taking longer than I anticipated. But it could be a lot worse. I could not have gone to college at all.

I remember when I was in high school, I decided that I didn't want to go to college. I was afraid. Afraid of debt. Afraid of failure. $39,000 dollars and a longer list of shortcomings later, I am okay. I recognized that I will make mistakes. How else will I learn?

I discovered that I am resilient. I can bounce back from anything as long as God gives me health and strength and a sound mind.

Wondering Where We Stand....

Have you gone through life wondering where you stand?

Relationships are often complicated. Especially if more than feelings are involved. But what is it about platonic relationships that can be more complicated than physical sometimes?

If you have a scuff with a friend, how long should it last? What determines who's right or who's wrong? What if it is your first major fight? And if you stop speaking, does it mean the friendship was true?

I am a passive and aggressive. I tend to be more patient with strangers than my friends, because I expect more of my friends. But that doesn't mean that I treat the horribly. I am human. I make mistakes.

I love my friends because to me, they are family. I believe that my best friends are put in my life because God put them there for me, and put me in their lives as well.

But I can't help but wonder sometimes where we stand....
